May 1, 2023, is the 121st anniversary of Labor Day in the Philippines. This day is also
known as "Araw ng mga Manggagawa". The very first Labor Day in the country was a result of a protest by the initial workers' union against American imperialism and capitalism, which aimed for the country's independence. This historical event was documented in the Official Gazette of the Philippines.
Labor Day was officially celebrated for the first time on
May 1, 1903, as recorded in the Official Gazette. This celebration marked the
establishment of the Union Obrera Democratica de Filipinas (UODF), previously
known as the Union Obrera Democratica, which was founded on February 2, 1902,
by Isabelo de los Reyes and Herminigildo Cruz. The UODF is acknowledged as the
first labor union in the Philippines.
On Labor Day, people usually take a break from work and
spend time with their loved ones. However, in places like Malacañang and major
cities like Manila, labor movements and parades are held as a part of the
celebrations. During these activities, laborers raise awareness about their
grievances, such as insufficient minimum wages, poor working conditions, and
other problems that violate the rights of workers.
Philippines Labor Day is a day that advocates for fair
treatment of all workers, regardless of the sector they work in. It is a day to
promote and ensure that every hardworking Filipino is treated fairly,
regardless of their job.
