Holy Week honors the events surrounding Jesus' crucifixion
and final hours on earth. It commemorates the Paschal Mystery, the suffering
and death of our Lord, Jesus Christ, as well as his triumphant resurrection,
victory over sin and death, and elevation to divinity by his Father. As a time
of devotion to Jesus Christ's Passion, the Christian church observes Holy Week,
which is the week between Palm Sunday and Easter Sunday, with a special
solemnity.
Palm Sunday marks the beginning of Holy Week. On that day, people wave palm branches, throw cloaks in his way, and shout their praises as Jesus rode into Jerusalem on a donkey. Then, on Holy Monday, Mary anoints Jesus' feet while Jesus visits his Bethany neighbors. Then, on Holy Tuesday, Jesus predicts Judas' betrayal and Peter's denial. On Holy Wednesday, Judas surrendered Jesus in exchange for 30 silver coins after striking a bargain with the high priests. Additionally, Holy Thursday commemorates the Eucharist's institution at the Last Supper by Jesus. The following day, Good Friday, honors Jesus' suffering when he is executed by crucifixion. He was crucified and buried in a tomb. On Holy Saturday, Jesus then makes his way into the abyss. Finally, on Easter Sunday, Jesus resurrection from the dead.
Christians reflect on the occasions leading up to Jesus'
crucifixion and, in accordance with their beliefs, his resurrection throughout
Holy Week. We commemorate Jesus' birth, life, death, and resurrection during
this season. We meditate on his teachings, recall his deeds, and renew our
commitment to acting as his followers in the present. It is a time to pause and
consider our deeds while remembering that Jesus gave his life in sacrifice for
us. Holy Week is known as the Great Week in the Greek and Roman liturgical
texts because God performed great deeds during this week.
